It seems that recently there has been a lot of new companies trying to promote the online doctor consultations via apps and website subscriptions. Some see it as a way of saving the NHS and taking the pressure off them, which in theory seems a good idea. The latest smart phone app to launch is 'Dr Now', it offers immediate consultations and diagnosis/medication via video with a qualified GP for a small fee. I am one of those people who is always rushing around and feel sometimes I don't have time to go to the GPs, so when I first heard about this, I thought it would be saving time all round; to the NHS, the GPs and the patients.
Pryers Solicitors were interested to see if this would work, so did a survey to see if the the general public across the UK would prefer the video consultations. A staggering 68% said they wouldn't use it and this was before they were told they would have to pay for it. The over 65s were really against it, with 85% of them saying they would not use it. I guess for them it would be a whole new experience that just complicates things, especially if they are not as up to date with technology as the younger people.
I was more for the idea before I found out you had to pay. Especially with having kids, you worry about them a lot more and always want to get them checked 'just incase', even when you're sure they're ok which could add up. I have also thought about people like my mum who has skin issues, arthritis, hip problems.. she is always at the doctors being checked out and getting new medications, for her it would cost so much! I think it might work for those who rarely go to the doctors or who rarely get ill and are willing to pay if they do think they have something wrong, but like most things, it isn't going to work for everyone.
